Make sure your tools are sharp

Rough cut stock into round
Turn the ends to the desired diameter after roughing your stock
Make light cuts and creep up on desired diameter
Mark the lines where you want to begin to increase the diameter
Continue shaping the middle, make sure to keep turning until the lines of the inserts intersect and become a seamless completed knot
Blend areas using finishing cuts
Take a step back and make sure you are happy with the shape and design before sanding to finish
