Jim explained the dimensional requirements for glued up bowl in general

There were examples of segmented and open segmented bowls on display

Jim had a nice display with the basic glue up subassemblies shown

Precision makes it work so a good cutting jig is very important

At the lathe, Jim starts with a substrate mounted in the chuck

If your lathe doesn't include indexing, a homemade indexing system works well

He illustrates the indexing and gluing for an open segment bowl blank

Open segmenting glue up is a matter of following the sequence

A better look at the first layer of an open segmented glue up

A great demo with the crowd staying to the very end

For standard glue ups, Jim does them in halfs, trues each half, and will next assemble both halves

Completed rings are assembled into "stacks" to build the bowl blank

The top rim of the bowl blank is glued on

With a different prop, Jim shows how to secure the top so the tailstock can be used

The turning tools and techniques are the same as a regular bowl

While it is interrupted cuts, the bowl is all face grain orientation
