One of the keys is the ability to index the headstock, whether built in or homemade

Paul uses his marking tool, height spaced to indicate the centerline of the abrasive drum

A die grinder with an abrasive head does the fluting work

The work piece is indexed around as the abrasive is used to sand in the flutes

Depth, spacing, and radius of abrasive are all the creative choices available

An example of the fluting technique done by Paul

The same concept can be applied to the outside of a turning

Paul marks and demos the technique on the outside of the bowl

This can be done on the axis of rotation creating fluting

With a tilting table, you can do off axis fluting creating spirals
