The after school turning demonstration was set up in the school cafeteria |
Kurt Hertzog was invited to demonstrate woodturning to the Native American children |
Kurt begins by showing the variety of items than lend themselves to woodturning starting with bowls ... |
then shows a variety of turned lidded boxes |

There were also tops, goblets, and of course pens |
Kurt shows some of the skill building practice items such as eggs |
The actual cutting begins with the making of stick pens |
After a bit of explanation about friction finishes ... |

Kurt demonstrates it's use on the pen |
No demonstration for kids would be complete without tops |
Kurt gets started with a top |
One of the students picks the colors for decoration |

The selected colors are applied to the top |
After completing it, it's given a test drive to check how well it works |
There were plenty of tops for all of the kids to take with them |
The demonstration moves on to how different tools cut |

Kurt shows the kids how sandpaper feels and how it works |
It was a fun demo and a very attentive audience |
The demo finishes with a question and answer session |
All of the kids got pens and tops to keep and extras went home for brothers and sisters |
