A Visit to the Holland School

In June, Jim Hilburger and Barb Berger visit the Holland Middle School to put on a woodturning demo

Mrs. Greenley and Mrs. Slade are the two 5^th Grade teachers

The students, all with safety glasses, get a seat to watch "Papa Jim" do his stuff

Jim Hilburger, a frequent demonstrator for kids, explains how the process of woodturning works

Jim launches into his "less than 2 minutes" top turning demonstration

Have you ever seen this many 5^th graders this quiet?

After Jim finishes a top, this student gets to apply the coloring to it

He seems pleased with the way it turned out

Another student takes his turn at the paint job on his top (each of the kids received turned pens and tops)

Jim demos some beads and coves in preparation for captive rings

You have to get a lot closer to really appreciate this part of the demo

Later, one of the students gets a "hands on" lesson from Jim

And another student gives it a try

Not to be outdone, one of the ladies gets a lesson ...

and soon she's making mountains of curly shavings as well
